Rendezvous Region
Turtle Mountain Region

Heart of North America Nature Trail

Aurora BorealisThe Heart of North America Nature Trail is a driving trail that documents a journey through some of North Dakota's most scenic and geologically magnificent wonders. Follow the trail through the Turtle Mountain Region in North Dakota into Manitoba, Canada. Return south and continue east into North Dakota's Rendezvous Region.

Steeped in history, blessed with beauty and teeming with wildlife, the "Rendezvous Region" encompasses all of the rural towns located in both Pembina and Cavalier counties.  This unique area of Northeastern North Dakota was dubbed the "Rendezvous Region" since fur traders, trappers and Native Americans would "rendezvous" to buy goods and to barter.  Today, in addition to the state parks, museums, and celebrations, a highlight of the region is Pembina River Gorge. This 12,500-acre gorge is located at a geological crossroads where eastern deciduous forest, boreal forest and central grasslands all collide.

Traditional native dancerThe Turtle Mountain Region is one of not only cultural but natural significance. Visitors are introduced into the region by the International Peace Garden at the Canada/ North Dakota border which commemorates the commitment by both countries to remain at peace. Also located in the region is the state’s oldest and largest Chippewa Indian Reservation. A proposed Turtle Mountain Trail that leads from Belcourt and St. John through the Turtle Mountain Region to the International Peace Garden is in the works.
